summer hat question

I am so fascinated by use of hats in the 30s, 40s and on, and knowing about the earlier traditions, that I have another question. I take it that in rural areas of the U.S. fur felt hats would have been used by working men year round. However, nowadays we have straw and Panama hats, which take precedence during those months. Once Charlie you mentioned a lighter weight beaver felt. So, what do you say about the fur felt hats in summer in modern times? Should we wear our winter fur hats in summer, or hold out for lightweight fur, or go for the straws and Panamas only?
